Santa Fe’s authentic Japanese dining experience since 1975, Shohko Café is more than sushi. Renowned for offering the freshest and most exotic selection of fish (and consistently voted First Place for Best Sushi by readers of The Santa Fe Reporter), the restaurant also specializes in healthy, modern renditions of traditional Japanese dishes.

An enduring credo of founder and owner Shohko Fukuda is that each plate is “like a landscape” inviting the guest to enter, and therefore must be presented in a beautiful way. The analogy extends to Shohko Café itself, an establishment that offers a unique sensory experience in downtown Santa Fe (with free parking) akin to that of traveling in a foreign landscape---a place to relish the creaminess of a live uni or nosh on tender black clam from the Black Sea while sipping a refreshing glass of “nama” unpasteurized sake amidst the smoky aroma of grilled eel---within the curved walls of a former 19th century bordello dressed simply with fresh flowers and hand-hewn furniture and lamps.

Leading the pack in bringing Japanese cuisine and drink to Santa Fe, Shohko Café has developed New Mexico’s most exclusive, extensive sake and beer selection from Japan with over 35 labels. The different artisanal sake choices traverse all the premium grades and types, with flavor profiles ranging from delicate and aromatic to earthy and full-bodied. The wide selection has inspired Shohko to play with food pairings and develop a Six Course Sake Pairing Dinner that takes place on the first Tuesday of each month (reservations required), enabling her to experiment with off-menu dishes and match them with interesting sake.

Flying in fresh fish from all over the world three to five days a week, using all natural and organic ingredients as much as possible, Shohko Café provides a unique Santa Fe dining experience.
